Mission of the School PDF Print E-mail

  1. Offer a reliable and profound philosophical education
  2. Prepare for a rigorous and deep study of theology
  3. Answer the new evangelization and the cultural questions of today's society

1. A systematic philosophical formation

Academic activities of the School aim to promote the scientific research and the organic study of philosophic disciplines, in order that students may acquire:

  • the capacity to asking questions, beyond answers offered by other sciences
  • a deep love for truth
  • the development of a critical sense and a right ethical discernment
  • the systematic dominance of a philosophical patrimony of unending validity
  • capacity to confront oneself with the most influent cultural current in today's society
  • an adequate preparation for the dialogue
  • a rigorous reasoning
  • capacity to act with wisdom and coherence in the various areas: family, work, counselling, enterprise and politic society

To reach the proposed purpose, the School commits itself to:

Cultivate an authentic metaphysic philosophy (Fides et ratio, n. 83)

"I noticed that metaphysics gave me a new vision of the world, a deeper penetration of reality [...]. With metaphysics and philosophy I found the key to understanding and penetrating of the world. I would say a deeper, ultimate penetration." (John Paul II)

Not only teach history of philosophy but to actually do philosophy and culture

Present the philosophical topics in a structured, organic and complete way

Know the principles of the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas in fruitful dialogue with the current culture

Pay special attention to the connection between philosophy and bioethics, philosophy and the economic and political world

Teach to think, analyze, argue and express oneself clearly

2. Preparation for the study of theology

"It is necessary therefore that the mind of the believer acquire a natural, consistent and true knowledge of created realities - the world and man himself - which are also the object of divine Revelation. Still more, reason must be able to articulate this knowledge in concept and argument." (Fides et ratio, n. 66)

To approach the study of theology, philosophy offers a series of essential instruments like respect for the truth of things, trust in reason, formation of a good rational discipline and development of the capacity of dialogue.

To reach this goal the Athenaeum offers a modern structure, equipped with the most advanced technologies and didactic instrumentations and a specialized library. Also it organizes many scientific events that can brag about the participation of consolidated exponents with international prestige, activated in collaboration with the Schools of theology and bioethics.

All this in an environment that favours the fertile harmony between academic and spiritual life, as well as love for the pope and adherence to the teachings of the Church.

3. Answer to the new evangelization and to cultural questions of today's society

"I have myself emphasized several times the importance of this philosophical formation for those who one day, in their pastoral life, will have to address the aspirations of the contemporary world and understand the causes of certain behaviour in order to respond in appropriate ways." (Fides et ratio n. 60)

The Athenaeum offers the philosophy students the possibility to interact with other programs that concern important areas of pastoral and cultural life.

In didactics professors connect the various subjects with the most important current problems.

Academic life is rich of activities, numerous congresses and conferences promoted by the School of Philosophy, Theology and Bioethics, by the Università Europea di Roma and the Dipartimento Master.

The students of Licentiate can integrate their studies with the Master in Science and Faith, organized under the auspice of the Pontifical Counsel for Culture (inside the project STOQ sponsored by the Templeton Foundation)
